Is BoG HQ prioritized over Suame Interchange? Kwame Agbodza questions Majority Leader

Kwame Governs Agbodza, the Ranking Member on the Roads and Transport Committee in Ghana’s Parliament, has criticized the Majority Leader, Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, for defending the construction of a new Bank of Ghana headquarters despite public outcry.

The project is estimated to cost $250 million. Agbodza voiced his concerns, highlighting that the stalled Suame Interchange project in Kumasi requires urgent attention.

Agbodza believes that Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu should prioritize developmental projects, particularly the completion of the Suame Interchange in the Ashanti Region, over the construction of the Bank of Ghana headquarters.

In a tweet, Agbodza expressed his frustration about the neglect of projects in the Ashanti Region: “Hon Majority leader must state his priorities clearly. Is the BoG HQ more important than the Suame interchange? Residents of Kumasi are still very angry because the €135m Suame Interchange Project has been abandoned. Yet the Majority Leader is defending the construction of a $250m BoG HQ?”

Meanwhile, it has been announced that physical construction on the Suame Interchange project is expected to commence in August 2023, as the project designs are ready. Francis Gabrah, the Ashanti Regional Director of the Urban Roads Department, mentioned that while physical work has not yet started, the project campsite is nearing completion, and work could even begin before August.

The timeline for the start of construction on the Suame Interchange project remains to be confirmed.
