Disregard purported increase in transport fares – Transport Ministry

The Ministry of Transport has refuted claims of an imminent increase in public transportation costs across the country, urging the public to disregard recent statements by the Ghana Private Road and Transport Union (GPRTU).

The GPRTU had earlier announced a proposed 20% upward adjustment in transport fares, citing excessive taxes on spare parts as the primary reason for the decision.

In response to the GPRTU's statement, the Ministry of Transport has issued a clarification, asserting that there have been no negotiations with transport operators regarding a fare review.

The Ministry emphasised that the existing transportation costs should be adhered to despite any potential charges projected by commercial drivers in the coming days.

“There has not been any negotiation with the transport operators for a review of transport fares,” the Ministry stated categorically.

Furthermore, the Ministry assured the public that any decisions related to fare adjustments would be communicated transparently, as has been done in the past.

It emphasised its commitment to maintaining fair and reasonable public transport fares, taking into consideration the needs of both transport operators and the general public.
