Chieftaincy crisis: Dr KK Sarpong blocked from Offinso tour amidst heightened tensions

Former Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) boss, Dr Kofi Koduah Sarpong, has been barred from visiting Offinso residents in a familiarization tour amid chieftaincy tensions.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the Offinso Municipal Assembly has cautioned against any group actions that could exacerbate the ongoing chieftaincy disagreements.

The municipal office issued this directive through a letter addressed to Dr. Sarpong, who is said to have been chosen by Offinso’s ousted queen mother, Nana Ama Serwah Nyarko, as the Offinsomanhene, the paramount chief of the area.

The deposed queen mother, who was destooled in January 2024, had remained silent until a letter dated March 13, 2024, purportedly under her letterhead, surfaced on social media, claiming to have appointed Dr Sarpong as Offinsomanhene, despite the Asante Kingdom’s overlord, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, having already confirmed Nana Amoako Poku’s appointment and installation as the recognized chief.

In a reply, the MCE directly addressed Dr. Sarpong, acknowledging his intention to commence a familiarization tour in Offinso to declare his alleged appointment, and has urged the postponement of the programme until further notice.

“The Council wish to advise your outfit to rescind your decision and suspend the programme until further notice. Please, if you fail to comply with this directive, you will be held responsible should there be any eventuality,” the letter added.

The decision to destool the queen mother was made by Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, after she persistently nominated KK Sarpong as paramount chief despite being advised otherwise.

Pro-KK Sarpong indigenes were seen in a video that circulated last week, acknowledging his appointment and paying homage to him as the Offinsomanhene.

However, Manhyia Palace, the seat of the Asantehene, has yet to comment on these developments.
