GJA Elections: Charles Mawusi Withdraws from Race

Charles Mawusi, one of the contenders in the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) presidential race, has withdrawn from the contest just hours before polls open today, Monday, June 30, 2025.

The decision, made after careful internal assessment, follows a poll conducted by his own campaign team that he may get less than 10% of votes.

According to campaign insiders, Mawusi decided with a clear conscience and a deep sense of responsibility to the Association.

He is said to have prioritized the GJA's unity and credibility over personal ambition, choosing to exit the race with integrity rather than risk a divisive outcome.

"This is not surrender, it's a smart and selfless decision," a senior campaign aide said. "Charles came into this race to offer ideas, not to break the spirit of the Association."

Sources indicate that Mawusi was crestfallen during his final campaign outreach, visiting GBC, Ghanaian Times, Graphic Communications Group,  GNA,  and the regions where he encountered a consistent message: the majority of GJA members had already aligned with the incumbent’s message of continuity.

"Charles read the room and realized that most voters were already committed elsewhere," the source said.

Privately, Mawusi is reported to have acknowledged strategic missteps, including relying heavily on campaign manager Michael Mawugbe and Social Media lead Justice Adobe, who had pushed him to stay in the race.

He also expressed regret that political undertones became associated with parts of his campaign, an image he personally detested. "Charles is a consensus builder by nature.

Despite the setback, Mawusi remains focused on the future. His team believes that stepping down now will preserve his credibility and position him well for a future contest.

Mawusi is expected to re-emerge with a broader, more inclusive message.

He is also making quiet efforts to share his campaign ideas with the incoming administration, signaling a willingness to support progress regardless of position.
