Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu defends tax, claiming sports betting fosters youth idleness
Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, a veteran member of parliament and the current Majority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, has expressed his support for the imposition of a tax on winnings from betting and lottery activities.
He believes that betting doesn’t promote hard work but instead encourages people, particularly the youth, to engage in unproductive and lazy behaviors.
During an interview on Angel FM, the Suame MP emphasized the importance of hard work and advised the youth to focus on industrious endeavors rather than relying on luck through betting. He stated that he personally doesn’t believe in lottery and luck, but rather in the value of working hard to achieve financial success.
The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) recently announced that a 10% withholding tax will be imposed on all gross gaming winnings starting from August 15, 2023. This move is part of the government’s effort to generate revenue from the gambling industry and encourage a culture of hard work among the youth.
